Introduction to “Eid – al – Adha”
Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is an important Islamic holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide. It honors the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (A.S) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. However, before the sacrifice could take place, God provided a ram to sacrifice instead.
During Eid al-Adha, Muslims commemorate this event by sacrificing an animal, usually a sheep, goat, cow, or camel, as a symbol of Ibrahim (A.S) obedience and devotion to God.
Eid al-Adha is also a time for Muslims to perform the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca if they are able to do so. The holiday is marked by prayers, feasts, giving to charity, and spending time with family and friends. It is a time of reflection, gratitude, and community for Muslims around the world.
History of “Eid – al – Adha”
According to Islamic belief, Prophet Ibrahim(A.S) had a dream where he was commanded by God to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience. Both Ibrahim (A.S) and Ismael (A.S) were willing to obey God’s command, demonstrating their steadfast faith. As Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son, God intervened and, accepting his devotion and obedience, provided a ram for the sacrifice. This event symbolizes the importance of submission to God’s will and the concept of sacrifice for the sake of faith. Eid al-Adha serves as a reminder of the faith and devotion of Prophet Ibrahim(A.S), emphasizing the values of obedience, gratitude and generosity.
Today, Muslims around the world celebrate Eid al-Adha by performing the ritual of sacrificing an animal (qurbani), sharing meat with family, friends and the needy, and engaging in charitable and social service activities. It is a time of spiritual reflection, gratitude and unity within the Muslim community.
